Hi Gypsy, it's all bull. I've did a degree in the Natural Sciences (maths, chemistry, physics, geology), and a degree in the so-called Social Sciences (economics, politics, psychology, etc.) and, in my humble opinion, parapsychology is neither a science (whether or not its advocates use empirical methods), nor is it a respected or recognised form of study (since the supernatural doesn't exist).

It's therefore a way of fooling people into parting with their valuable time, resources and cash.

Like saying magicians who produce bunny rabbits out of empty hats are genuine creators of life from nothingness. It's all bull.

We get that question a lot here. If you browsed some of the previous versions of this question, you would read some good answers as well as some rather biased answers. A lot of people get wrapped up in arguing whether parapsychology is a science or not.

There are some individuals who uphold the highest principles of scientific inquiry when it comes to investigating the paranormal, but most do not. At my blog, Public Parapsychology, I try to focus on the activities of those who do. I'm also of the minority opinion that parapsychology can be practiced as an art (i.e. as in 'martial art' or 'medicinal art') as well as a science.

Every time someone asks your question, the skeptics and the supporters of parapsychology at Yahoo come here to battle it out. Both sides been battling it out in some form or another for over 150 years, so it's not likely to get settled in this forum. I encourage you to explore for yourself what science is, and if you think the activities of academic parapsychologists belong within that realm.

There is no science to the supernatural - science deals with the natural world, in short, reality. The supernatural is called this because they can't prove or even show that it even exists - so it's not natural. Thus, any attempt to use science to prove the supernatural doesn't work. Which is why parapsychologists have such trouble getting jobs - their field doesn't make sense. They definitely aren't scientists.

Derived from the Latin word "para", which means "beyond", parapsychology literally means beyond psychology. It is generally defined as the scientific study of paranormal phenomena. It also requires some sort of scientific evidence and investigation (ESP, telepathy...etc). So yeah, your thoughts on it were pretty much correct...

Yes you are right, it is the scientific study of the supernatural. You did make me smile though.....I think you have invented a new word, what was you trying to say at the beginning of your question: what exactly or what actually? lol!

Have a good day :o)
